2003

The Delco Phantoms Girls
19U ~and~ 15U
2nd Annual
Invitational Presidents Day Weekend Tournament

February 15, 16 and 17, 2003

With the Governors of Delaware and New Jersey having already declared States of Emergency and the Governor of Pennsylvania finally declaring a Disaster Emergency at 11:00 PM on Sunday February 16th, The fate of the 2nd Annual Phantoms President's Day Tournament was sealed.

Snow, that began early Sunday Morning, dumped over a foot of the white stuff on IceWorks, before the last game of the day concluded.  Snow, driven by high winds, continued to fall heavily Sunday night and into Monday across the Middle Atlantic states.  DOT trucks plowed major arteries undisturbed by traffic that couldn't get onto the highway because access ramps had not been plowed.

Many will remember, what is being called, the Blizzard of 2003.  We'll remember... being confronted with a storm that had already dumped 12 inches and was predicted to leave 25 to 30 inches, of snow, in Philadelphia and the northern and western suburbs... the anxiety of our participating players and parents... teams with players who had already decided to leave the tournament early... and those teams and individual players who hung in to the bitter end.  Only three storms on record have left more than 20 inches of snow in the city and this one could prove to be one of the snowiest in the Philadelphia region in the past 100 years.

IceWorks Skating Complex began curtailing operations late Sunday evening and finally determined that they would not open Monday, February 16th, 2003.  It was with great regret, that the 2003, Delco Phantom's Girls President's Day Tournament had to be concluded with only games already played or forfeited counting.

The last two games played (15U girls), are a testament to the future of Girl's Ice Hockey and all the participants in this year's tournament.  These girls stayed to play and their parents supported them.  While snow piled up outside, they were not deterred form the sport they love.

Our hats are off to the dedication of those who participated in this years tournament (and their parent's), and we wish them every success in life.

THE 2003 PRESIDENT'S DAY TOURNAMENT COMMITTEE

With the storm causing the early conclusion of the tournament, we were unable to take pictures of the winning teams.  Therefore, this all too common picture, will have to suffice.
