The Can/Am Challenge Cup, Lake Placid, New York - April 22-26, Phantoms 2 wins the Gold Medal! Check out the Gold Medal banner soon to be hanging at ICEWORKS!
Phantoms 2 faced some great competition in this tournament. The other teams in the girls' division were: Lake Placid Rockets (Lake Placid, NY), Lake City Stars (Plattsburgh, NY), Seacoast Lightning (New Hampshire), Glaciers (Warminster, PA) and Phantoms 1.
Phantoms 2 met the Lake City Stars (New York All Star team) in the championship game. In pool play these two teams battled to a 1-1 tie. Phantoms 2 defeated the Lake City Stars in triple overtime to win the Gold Medal at the Can/Am Challenge Cup. The third 'sudden death' overtime came down to a 2 on 2 format. High scoring forwards Missy Pacitti and Jill Gray teamed up to create several good scoring chances and then buried the puck, off a rebound for the big win!
Do You Believe in Miracles?!?
In the Can/Am Skills Competition , Phantoms 2, was runner up in every category:
Goalie: Allie DiRico
Scoring Challenge: Jill Gray
Speed Relay: Jessica Cowperthwait, Jenna Boncziewski, Kaitlin Hein and Missy Pacitti
By the time the Can/Am Challenge Cup ended on Sunday, lots of folks were asking,
..."who are these Phantoms, anyway?"

FROM THE COACH
Dear Phantoms Purple Girls,
Last September, the Phantoms-2 girls team was scheduled to be in an
under-15 league made up of 3 teams. Unfortunately, one team folded
causing this entire age group be eliminated. At that time, Mrs. Hein had
to make a quick decision, whether to enter Phantoms purple in the 19 and
under division, or play all non-league games.
You know what she chose, and now the rest is history. You are now the
DVHL Inaugural Girls 19 and under CHAMPIONS! So, as you reflect back on
this magical season, don t forget the effort you put into becoming a
championship team. From reading the 25 page playbook and memorizing our
special terms, to working on the many varied and sometimes crazy drills
we did at practice. Don t forget the diving contests, starts and stops,
jumping contests, and left-right-1-2-3 s. And let s not forget Jeremy s
heart-stopping skating drills, just when you thought you couldn't push
yourself any further.
But you did push yourselves practice after practice, game after game. We
should have known how special this team was after our first opposition-
the Quakers on October 16th. The rink was freezing, but the Phantoms
were hot. In case it has slipped your mind, that was the day Mrs. DiRico
and Mr. Pacitti were counting shots and goal,. and the result?
Phantoms-98, Quakers-2. It was then that I saw a glimpse of your future,
celebrating a victory of 11-0.
Another benchmark was our first road trip to Montgomery. (Let s forget
that game, except for Jenna's unbelievable goal and the fun we all had
at the Lone Star Restaurant!). Looking back, I feel we bonded as a team
at that time, and sleepy as we were, we beat Reston handily.
Granted we had our fortunate moments, like Phantoms-1 game at First
Union Center and the championship games in the playoffs where we were
NEVER behind, and unfortunate ones such as the loss to Old York Road at
home and the tragedy involving Vicky's sister. Through it all, I have
seen fifteen young ladies learn to look for options before they pass, to
support on offense and defense, to step up and not wait for the puck
carriers to challenge us, and to have the courage and determination to
become champions.
Personally, I have had great joy watching you develop as a team. Seeing
your enthusiasm in the locker room (especially at Iceworks in #5 on the
Olympic side), watching you absorb our system, and bringing overwhelming
emotion to our victories is the reason all coaches volunteer their time.
I thank you for giving me the opportunity to be behind your bench- you
are a VERY special group- Missy the Hawaiian Tropic Queen, the Twin
Towers Molly and Kate, the mighty mites Emiley and Dana (Habib), Allie
an Awesome goalie with the fisherman's hat, Flex the Tapeball, the
Gerbit-Wookie, Dreidel Girl Jill, Jenna- the Montgomery goalie's least
favorite player, Bridget the offensive and defensive force, Jessica the
determined winger- always at her point, Katie Herzog the "skull
ring" queen, Jen Hughes- who was willing to dive into a goalpost in
the championship game to keep a puck out, Lauren the Backstreet dancer,
Kelly the steady up and coming winger, and Kristy, whose goal line to
goal line rushes warm my heart.

So, from the coaching
staff- Mr. Cotugno, Mr. Malmstrom, and myself, our hats are off to
each and every one of you. Reflect back, smile, and as Mr.
Malmstrom said in the locker room before the championship game,
"Win today and walk together forever". And I don't
forget that as you stare up at our championship banner as you
enter the Iceworks rinks, you deserve every one of those
incredible memories from this fantastic season. Cherish them and
get ready to begin again next September!!.
Sincerely, Fritz Schoeninger

The Girls have many funny
memories, like the time Bridget's shells dropped to her ankles and she
fell on her face coming onto the ice; Missy dumping water on Bridget s
head; Fritz saying He'd "unleash" Bridget; Everyone
dancing in the locker room; Missy dropping her pants during a game.
