1:45 PM - Hershey-B at Ice Works - W 5 1
After all the practices, now it
is time for the Phantoms to see how they look against some
competition. The first game of the season was against Hershey,
at Iceworks. But even though it was preseason, the action was
intense. It was the first Phantom game for Hope Toogood, Natasha
Wurst, Lindsay Clarke, Amanda Giampapa, Melissa Kelly, Kimmy
Kirkpatrick, Mallory Zappa, and Kaitlin Donovan. And one of them
would get their first Phantom goal today. Also joining the team
for the game was Lauren Johnston, who arrived for her practice
and agreed to play for us.
The Phantoms got the season off to a good start with an
unassisted goal by Jenna Bonczewski. This was the only goal of
the period, but Jenna scored again at 7:17 of the second period
to make the score 2 - 0 in favor of the Phantoms. Meredith was
strong in net, and the defense did a particularly good job of
keeping the Bears from having good quality shots.
At 10:04 of the second period Lindsay Clarke scored her first
goal as a Phantom on a nice rush from her defensive position.
The assist went to Kirsty Schoeninger and Jenna. The Phantoms
looked confident as the third period began, as Kirsty scored
with only ten seconds gone by. The assist again went to Jenna.
The final goal was also scored by Kirsty, with the assists
tallied by Jenna, making it a five point game for her, and also
an assist was given to Lindsay Clarke. Hershey was able to score
at 13:56 of the game to spoil Meredith's shutout, but the
coaches left the ice thinking this team had a lot of promise for
the 2000-2001 season.

- 8:30 AM - Hershey at Ice Works - W 6 0
The
Delco Phantoms B team was off to a great start on Saturday
October 14 versus the Hershey Bears. Goaltender Meredith Pia
lead the motivated squad onto the ice, even though she was
hobbled by a deep thigh bruise. As it turned out, the defense
thwarted virtually every effort from the Hershey offense,
limiting them to only 11 shots on net. Offensively, the Phantoms
pulled together to have six different players score on 52 shots.
Kelly Winther had the opening goal assisted by Alison Murray and
Kimmy Kirkpatrick- who had a team leading three assists- what a
play maker!
Alison, playing a strong offensive game
scored early in the second period, followed by Hope Toogood on a
nice shot who tallied her first goal as a Phantom. Jenna
Bonczewski also scored in the second period, while playing a
strong offensive game featuring her blazing speed. In the third
period Kaitlin Donovan, who earned two assists, rushed the puck
end to end, but was stopped by an impressive Hershey goaltender.
Fortunately, Kaitlin's linemate, Amanda Giampapa was crashing
the net and lifted her first goal over the fallen netminder. Her
smile was enough to light up the entire rink as she was
congratulated by her teammates. The final goal was one for the
highlight reels as Kirsty Schoeninger moved back to offense and
wheeled the puck out of her zone, daring the Hershey defenders
to stop her. Before Hershey could backcheck, Kirsty deked the
goalie and the red light blazed for the sixth time. It made
Coach Schoeninger smile , as he saw promising effort by the team
on offense and defense. Next game is against the newly formed
Lehigh Valley Comets.

- 1:00 PM - Shooting Stars at Lehigh Valley Ice Arena - T 2 2
The Delco Phantoms Girls B team was off to its first road trip
on Saturday October 21st to visit the Lehigh Valley Shooting
Stars. Uncharacteristically, the Phantoms were out shot in the
first period 7 - 4, but due to the stellar play of assistant
captain Meredith Pia, no goal would enter her net throughout the
first two periods.
Deadlocked at 0 - 0 after
the second period, coach Nevin and Schoeninger made some
offensive and defensive adjustments and Tiffany Baker tallied
the first goal after several outstanding offensive plays using
sheer determination and swift skating. Assists on the goal went
to Alison Murray, who unselfishly played the entire game on
defense- looking like a veteran backliner, and captain Kirsty
Schoeninger who also played two periods warding off offensive
rushes.
The shooting Stars
continued to attack in waves and scored twice to take a lead.
Then the character of the Phantoms was tested, never having
played a game from behind. But just when you needed a goal-
captain Jenna Bonczewski scored from Kelly Winther and Jess
Goldey to tie the game.
The defense held for the
rest of the game, and the offense pressured the Lehigh net, but
the score was to remain deadlocked at 2 -2. Special
congratulations to Meredith Pia who played her best game of the
year- aggressively playing pucks behind the net and controlling
all action in front of the goal.

- 7:00 PM - NJ Colonials PW A at Floyd Hall Arena - L 1 5
The Phantoms team took one of their longer trips up the New
Jersey Turnpike on Saturday (10/28/00) night to visit the New
Jersey Colonial Pee Wee team. Both teams went into the game with
only two lines and three defensemen, giving everyone plenty of
ice time. The Phantoms held the Colonials to a single goal in
the first period, while being out shot 10 to 1.
But the determination and
teamwork of the Phantoms would not allow the experienced
Colonials to blow the game open. Playing while suffering from
flu like symptoms was Jessica Goldey, volunteering to supplement
the defensive squad, and turning away rush after rush of the
Colonials- she was impressive indeed. Likewise, Alison Murray
moved back to defense, and showed her knowledge of the game as
she foiled the Colonials quick transition attack. Most of all,
however, it was Jen Hughes who led the defenseman on Saturday.
Over and over she foiled oncoming rushes with physical
domination and heads-up defensive play while double shifting
again and again. She is a fine example of a knowledgeable player
who leads the way with spirited play- no matter who is the
opposition, willing and eager to do anything asked of her. It is
character like Jen's that will carry this team a long way this
season.
Starring in net was
assistant captain Meredith Pia, who faced 40 Colonial shots,
including many from the accomplished defenseman at the point
position. Again and again Meredith provides the glue to hold the
team together when a key save is made at a critical moment in
the game. Key play was also demonstrated by center Hope Toogood,
who hustles every shift- every period of the game .
The one lone bright
offensive moment was a goal by Kirsty Schoeninger on an
end-to-end rush, faking the goalie with a reverse direction shot
with only 6 seconds remaining in the game. The assist went to
forward Amanda Giampapa, her first of this young season. It was
as if the Phantoms were saying to the Colonials, we respect your
talent in the 5 - 1 loss, but we are a force to be reckoned
with- don't take us lightly.

1:45 PM - Hershey at Ice Works - W 5 3
On Saturday November 4th, the Hershey Bears came
to Iceworks to play the Phantoms who are undefeated in league
play. The Phantoms got off to an early start with an unassisted
goal by Kirsty Schoeninger. Also scoring for the Phantoms was
Jessica Goldey to go up by two. But Hershey was not going to
travel for an hour and a half and lay down mildly. They scored
to close the score to 2-1 before the end of the period.
Kirsty scored a
second unassisted goal, the only tally of the period. But in the
third period Hershey came roaring back. Two goals were scored
against the Phantoms as defensive lapses allowed Hershey to
score on breakaways, and a clever ploy from the Hershey coach
caught a Phantoms' player without a mouthpiece- teaching all
players how important it is to have full equipment at all times.
But Tiffany Baker was
to play hero this day. She scored on a backhand at 14:38 to put
the Phantoms back in the lead. Certainly this was enough to
provide a white horse for this determined player, but Tiffany
was not finished. She scored again with only 22 seconds left in
the game, assisted by Jess Goldey to cinch the win. Tiffany was
lauded by her teammates as she returned to the bench- another
shining example of the character of this young team. Next up-
the Glaciers on Saturday.
Final - 5 to 3
Phantoms.

| Sat 11/11/00
- 1:45 PM - Glaciers at Ice Works - W 8 1
The
Delco Phantoms Girls B team took to the ice against their rivals
from North Philadelphia- the Glaciers. The rivalry goes back
several years, with each team battling for every shot on goal.
But on this sunny afternoon, it was the Phantoms turn to shine.
Captain Jenna Bonczewski jumpstarted the team with a goal in the
first period. With her speed and acceleration, there were not
many Glaciers who could keep up with Jenna today.
The Glaciers fought back with a goal in
the second period, but Kaitlin Donovan, playing her best game as
a Phantom, led the team on an amazing 7 goal binge. Kaitlin
scored her first as a Phantom, then Tiffany Baker and two more
for Jenna, to give her the first Phantom hat trick of the year.
Next came Hope Toogood who continues her strong play, and then
Melissa Kelly found the back of the net for her first Phantom
goal. She was ecstatic, as was the team over their offensive
efforts. Finally, Kaitlin Donovan scored her second of the day
and the Phantoms whooped it up in the locker room after an 8-1
win.

- 6:45 PM - Washington Little Caps PW A at Ice Works - T 1 1
On
November 12th, the Little Caps skated onto the ice at Iceworks,
after a two hour ride up I-95. Coaches Schoeninger and Nevin
immediately knew the Phantoms were going to be challenged from
the opening faceoff. Between the pipes was an ill Meredith Pia,
who no one could have guessed was not her usual perky self.
Meredith faced the preponderance of shots in the first two
periods, allowing only one third effort goal to this strong
Little Caps team.
But the story of the day was an
invincible Phantoms defense. Leading the way were veterans
Lindsay Clarke, Sarah Hannan, and Jen Hughes, who made play
after play thwarting the Little Cap attack. Also serving well
was converted forward Kirsty Schoeninger and Alison Murray who
paired up with the regular defensemen to prevent even a single
breakaway on their netminder.
Coach Nevin was all smiles as her
defensive corps supported one another again and again and played
their strongest effort of the year. Their intelligent reads on
the Caps offense allowed the Phantoms offense to swarm in the
third period- outshooting the Caps 9-5. Then in a flash, the
puck squirted out in front of the Little Caps goalie, and Hope
Toogood slammed it home for her second goal in two days. It is
hard to believe Hope is outscoring John LeClair at this point in
the season, and she floated out of the rink after the game,
knowing she salvaged a tie for the Phantoms. Next up Hershey- in
Hershey.

| Sat 11/18/00
- 10:15 AM - Hershey at Twin Ponds East - W 10 0
The
Phantoms had an unbelievable weekend beginning with a road trip
to Hershey on November 18th. After Hershey had pulled even with
the Phantoms in their previous meeting, the girls wanted to get
off to an early start. But Coach Schoeninger had to be impressed
with the outpouring of offense in the game. In the first period
Jenna Bonczewski scored on a nice backhand, unassisted, followed
by Hope Toogood who continues to be a force at the center
position. Jenna scored again to open a three goal lead at the
beginning of the second period, then came a bright moment in
Natasha Wurst's season. Natasha had listened to tips about how
to improve her offensive ability, and she rushed the net in the
perfect position for a pass. Jenna lasered one right to Natasha
and her first Phantom goal was resting on the twine.
Jenna scored again in the second period
on a deke to her backhand to give her another hat trick! This
was followed by a goal by Kaitilin Donovan, whose second effort
pays off again and again. Kirsty Schoeninger had the seventh
goal on one of her patented end-to-end rushes, stickhandling and
shifting around opponent after opponent. Next came a goal by
Hope followed by the first defensive goal of the year by Sarah
Hannan. Sarah also contributed heavily, as did the other three
defensemen who supported the offense all afternoon. But the
highlight of this day was the first goal ever as a Phantom by
none other than Jen Hughes. Just as she likes to do, she crashed
the net late in the game. There was a scramble in front and Jen
rammed it home to the ecstatic cheers of the bench. Jen's smile
lit up the entire town of Hershey that afternoon as the Phantoms
left the rink with an impressive 10 - 0 victory, and another
shutout by Meredith Pia who made 19 saves.

Sun 11/19/00
- 6:45 PM - Chester County at Ice Works - W 8 0
The next day the lady Phantoms played
the Chester County Cougars at Iceworks. The Phantoms didn't take
long to continue the offensive outburst from the day before. By
the end of the period Jess Goldey had deposited a goal, along
with Alison Murray and Kelly Winther. Kelly played a
particularly spirited game, as she had previously played with
several members of this Cougar team. The goal scoring binge
continued with goals by Hope Toogood, another by Kelly Winther,
and one by Jenna Bonczewski. Jess Goldey scored again, followed
by a single goal from the stick of Melissa Kelly. This offensive
machine is on fire!!!
At the end of the second period the
coaches sent all defenseman up to play forward while Hope
Toogood, Alison Murray, Jenna Bonczewski and Kirsty Schoeninger
finished the game on defense- not allowing a goal. The shots on
goal favored the Phantoms by a total of 35 to 8, so Meredith Pia
surely didn't face her toughest challenge, but earned her second
consecutive shutout. Final victory 8-0. These dedicated Phantoms
have come a long way since September, and are looking to defend
the Phantoms' Hershey Tournament championship which spans the
last two years. |

Hershey Bears Thanksgiving Holiday Tournament |
Fri 11/24/00 -
6:00 PM Hershey at TPE - W 4 1
The Delco Phantoms departed from their Thanksgiving leftovers on
Friday November 24th to head to their first tournament of the
year. Game one on a brisk early evening game at Twin Ponds East
brought a victory by a score of 4 -1. Meredith Pia was strong
between the pipes, supported by an always strong defense in
front of her, especially back from injury the one and only Kimmy
Kirkpatrick! Kimmy had an extremely strong weekend, and everyone
welcomed her back. Scoring for the Phantoms were Jen Hughes who
had her own rooting section in the crowd, Alison Murray, Jess
Goldey, and Jenna Bonczewski. Coach Schoeninger, having spent
the previous 24 hours in bed with the flu, felt the solid bond
between the forwards and defense in supporting one another were
an indication that this team would make some noise in this
tournament.
Sat 11/25/00 -
1:15 PM - Shooting Stars at TPE - L 0 2
Game two brought the Lehigh Valley Shooting Stars as the next
opponent. Having tied this team in league play, the Phantoms
knew they would have to put their best foot forward. The game
plan was in place, knowing the players to concentrate on, and
the game was nip and tuck for the first period which ended in a
scoreless draw. Sarah Hannan, Lindsay Clarke, Kimmy Kirkpatrick,
and Jen Hughes were like an impenetrable wall of defense,
rushing the puck, and leading the offense out of their end.
After the second period, still no score with the Phantoms trying
to kickstart the offense. But the Lehigh defense was cautious
and wary of our shooters. at 11:47 the Stars scored to take the
lead, but the puck had actually defelected off a Phantom, so the
Stars still hadn't tallied a goal in the Phantoms hearts. The
offense began to mount some pressure, so Coach Schoeninger
pulled Meredith for the extra attacker. With 37 seconds left
Lehigh took a wide angle shot and Kirsty Schoeninger dove for
the puck, but it drifted in for a 2 - 0 Phantom loss.
Sat 11/25/00 -
8:15 PM - Bristol at TPE - T 1 1
Game three of the tournament brought the Phantoms together with
the Bristol Blazers. These teams had not met in league play, but
the scouting reports were gathered from Friday night, and the
team knew that Kelly Wojciechowski was the player to shut down.
Kelly already had set the tournament observers buzzing with her
slapshot and ability to go end-to-end. As a Tiger Lily, she
certainly made the Phantoms think an awful lot of Vicky Graham.
Certainly the Phantoms are no team to back away from the
challenge. In the locker room all forwards agreed to be
responsible for their forechecking assignments and the team took
to the ice.
To say this was an odd game, was the
understatement of the day. The Blazers scored first to go up by
a goal. But the Phantoms would not back down. Kimmy Kirkpatrick
took a shot from her point position, which miraculously sneaked
up Jenna pant leg. After a stride, the puck fell out, and landed
right on Kirsty's stick, who one timed it cleanly over the
goalie's shoulder and the score was tied. The Phantoms
knew this was going to be a physical game shortly afterward
after Bristol took a four minute boarding penalty which left
Kimmy Kirkpatrick in a heap behind our own net. Kimmy
immediately suffered a pretty stiff headache, and the Phantoms
tensed.
No scoring was featured in the second
period, as the Blazers took three more penalties, the Phantoms
none. Next to go down was Natasha Wurst, who had continued to
impress everyone with her two way play. A Bristol player had
actually left her feet, perhaps after hitting a rut on the ice,
and crashed Natasha into the boards, who had to be escorted off
the ice in the second period with a bad back.
By the third period, two Bristol
players had been helped to their bench and the referees were
doing all they could to keep control of the game. Natasha and
Kimmy resurrected themselves valiantly and returned to the
action. By games' end, Bristol had 18 minutes in penalties and a
bench game misconduct. In their huddle before period three, the
Phantoms agreed to stay out of the penalty box, knowing that the
first tie breaker to advance to the championship game after
head-to-head competition was fewest penalty minutes.
Jenna took one last penalty, a total of
four minutes for the Phantoms for the game, and Meredith refused
to let any discs even come close to our goal line and the game
ended in a tie. The Phantoms were fairly certain they were going
to the championship game, but waited to celebrate. The Blazers
began to hoot and celebrate after the handshake, seeming to know
they were the ones to advance. Three minutes after the Zamboni
took to the ice, the officials visited the Delco locker room and
congratulates the team on keeping their heads and wished them
well in the championship game. The cheers in that locker room
could have been heard back at Iceworks! We had a second chance
to prove to Lehigh Valley that we were a force to be reckoned
with.
Sun 11/26/00 -
2:00 PM - Championship vs Lehigh Valley at HPA - L 1 2
The rain streamed down outside the Hershey Arena as the Phantoms
geared up for one last game. But there was an ominous cloud
about to drift their way. The strength between the pipes had
been sick three times before the game and was a question mark.
Showing her true character, however, Meredith gritted her teeth,
ignored the fluttering in her stomach, and led the team onto the
ice. The game plan called for a combination of cautious play in
our own end, and opportunistic chances in the offensive zone.
After one period, no penalties, no score. But Meredith had
fought the sickness only so far, and the team called a time out.
Immediately Alison Murray stepped forward and offered to take
Meredith's place in goal and took to the ice. Meredith now
struggling to regain enough strength to return certainly
appreciated Alison's efforts, and the team rallied around this
courageous young lady. The Stars typically outshoot their
opponents by 35 to about 10, so Alison was facing a very tough
challenge. She was terrific, and the entire team took on the
extra challenge. Specifically Tiffany Baker, Melissa
Kelly, Amanda Giampapa, Natasha Wurst, Hope Toogood, and Mallory
Zappa played a strong game to tighten up any offensive chances
by the Stars. However, the Stars scored once in the second
and once in the third period before Meredith re-entered the
game.
At 7:24 the Phantoms roared back on a
beautiful pass from Jenna Bonczewski to Kirsty Schoeninger to
make it 2 - 1. Again and again every forward pushed Lehigh to
its limits, and Meredith would not let any puck by. But even
with the goalie pulled, it was just not enough, and the buzzer
sounded to give the Stars the gold medal. There was no shame on
the Phantom bench, the team knew that they had achieved their
goals in their game plan and had stuck up for their ailing
netminder. The trophy was presented to Meredith, for her
outstanding effort, but it could have easily been given to every
player who skated that weekend!
The Delco
Phantoms Girls-B are the 2nd Place Winners of the Hershey
Thanksgiving Hockey Tournament U19 Division. |
| Sat 12/2/00 -
1:45 PM - Glaciers at Ice Works - W 9 1
Meredith Pia
was back on her sturdy legs for the Glaciers' game on December
2nd. It didn't take long for the Phantom offense to take over as
Kaitlin Donovan scooped up a rebound in front of the Glacier net
at 1:58 to take the lead. Kaitlin continued her outstanding play
in front of the net- always ready to shoot when a puck squirted
loose in front of her, and she deposited her second goal of the
game, assisted by Kirsty Schoeninger and Tiffany Baker at 5:45.
Lindsay Clarke scored next, her first goal of the regular
season, working extremely hard on offense and defense. Certainly
there was a bit of rivalry between Lindsay and a few of her
friends on the Glaciers, and it brought out the best in
Lindsay's game.
The Glaciers then scored to make the
score 3-1, but the Phantoms stepped on the gas and scored six
unanswered goals. Tiffany Baker's goal was one for the highlight
reel. It was a give and go from Natasha Wurst, which Tiffany
deposited into the back door. Next came Sarah on an end-to-end
rush. You could see look of determination in Sarah's eyes as she
deked her way to the goal. Jenna was next as she crossed across
the crease and shot back against the grain for another back door
goal.
Kirsty's turn was next as she cut back
against the Glacier defense after circumventing every Glacier
forechecker. Jen Hughes then tallied, becoming an offensive
force. Jen now has three goals in her last four games. It just
goes to show the dedication the defense has to being two way
players, as does the offense to supporting the defense.
The final goal was Lindsay's second of
the day on another end-to-end jaunt. Lindsay had her best game
as a Phantom, as did her partner- Kimmy Kirkpatrick. Lindsay and
Kimmy showed considerable offensive talent as they rushed the
puck several times from their defensive positions. Kimmy was so
close on one rush, the entire team thought she had her first
goal. Lindsay's last effort froze the goalie with her
shot, and the Phantoms went to the locker room with a 9 - 1
victory. |
| Sun 12/3/00 -
6:45 PM - Typhoon PWB at Ice Works - L 1 5
On
Sunday December 3rd, the Phantoms hosted the Wilmington Typhoon
Pee Wee team, coached by Mr. Cowperthwait. Tending to the
Phantom net was Allie DiRico, a fill-in for Meredith Pia who
could not make the game. While the boys were younger than many
of the girls, it was easy to see from the warm-up that they were
skilled and experienced. The boys played a very quick transition
game- with a real heads-up defense. It took the girls a period
to adjust, and by that time they were down 3 - 0. Allie was
terrific between the pipes, and stood up to the many Typhoon
shots, covering anything around her, and stifling any rebound
near her net. There were some real highlights to report,
however, as Amanda Giampapa and Melissa Kelly began to master
the finer points of their game such as defensive face-offs,
while Natasha Wurst showed a lot of hustle as she became a two
way force in the game. Offensively and defensively Natasha
showed the best of her talents. And let's not forget about
Mallory Zappa, who stood up to every one of the boys'
challenges, refusing to budge on her forechecking mission.
This was a no checking game, but the
guys certainly knew how to position themselves and played like
real gentlemen- for there was not a single penalty in the game.
The result was a 5-1 loss for the Phantoms, but there were many
lessons learned from the boys about taking advantage of
opportunities and also learning to read the play as it develops.
Next up is the Lehigh Valley Stars, who have never seen a full
Phantoms' squad. With the Phantoms learning how to play at the
higher speed against the boys, they will surely be ready for the
game against the Stars. |
| Sat 12/9/00 -
1:45 PM - Shooting Stars at Ice Works - L 3 5
It was a
match of the undefeated titans on December 9th at Iceworks. It
was the undefeated Lehigh Valley Stars against the Delco
Phantoms. The Phantoms knew they were up against stiff
competition in this game, and as they took the ice, they knew
their job was to forecheck hard and cover their positions
on defense. Lehigh jumped out to the early lead, and it seemed
to rattle the Phantoms as their forechecking scheme seemed to
lag as they tried to regroup. But captain Kirsty Schoeninger
scored unassisted in one of her regular end-to-end scrambles to
tie the score.
Lehigh scored twice more before Tiffany Baker
scored for the Phantoms to get within a goal. Lehigh roared back
with two more, as the Phantoms tried their best to regroup and
put pressure on the Lehigh goalie. Finally Kaitlin Donovan was
where she likes to hang out, right on the opponents front porch,
and she scored to make it 5 - 3 loss for the home team. The
Phantoms were disappointed, but vowed to return to their
spirited play the next night against the Ladybugs from New
Jersey. |
| Sun 12/10/00
- 6:45 PM - Ladybugs (NJ) at Ice Works - W 3 2
On December
10th, there was disappointing news before the game even began.
Mr. Hughes and Jen were in a minor traffic accident and could
not make the game. Jen was surely going to be missed, as was
John's able help before every game. The Phantoms were hungry as
they were looking to rebound off the previous days' loss. Oddly,
the Phantoms had only two shots on goal the first period, but
scored on BOTH!! Kirsty Schoeninger flew her speeding
stickhandling around the Ladybugs radar and scored a beautiful
goal to spot the Phantoms an early lead. Then Tiffany Baker had
a break in front of the Ladybugs' goalie, but she shot wide.
Everyone on the bench knew that Tiffany would not be denied, and
on the same shift she rallied back and scored to make it 2 - 0
Phantoms.
In the second period Kirsty went on another
one of her missions as the Ladybugs' coach encouraged his
players to smother Kirsty's efforts. She broke loose in front,
skated left, shot back against the grain and it was 3 - 0
Phantoms and it proved to be the game winner. The Ladybugs were
not about to drive all the way down without a fight, however,
and the shots from the Ladybugs came in droves. The defense, led
by an exhausted Lindsay Clarke, a confident and always steady
Sarah Hannan, a dedicated presence by young Kimmy Kirkpatrick
and the goal scorer ,Kirsty Schoeninger, held the team together.
When they weren't thwarting offensive rushes by the Ladybugs,
they were casually leading offensive rushes themselves. This
defense is the best in the league, bar none, and they get
stronger every game under the tutelage of assistant coach
Barbara Nevin.
However the story of the game can not be
written without a tremendous debt of gratitude to the goaltender
for the Phantoms- Meredith Pia. Facing 29 shots, Meredith was a
tower of strength, catching pucks, deflecting them to the
corner, and controlling the crease in front of her like general
leading her charges into battle. Meredith's play inspired the
team to have a renewed dedication to controlling the puck in
their own end. While the defense was causing the Ladybug
shooters to shoot from bad angles, Meredith was scooping up
every available puck to snuff out the Ladybug chances. The New
Jersey club had still one more goal on their sticks, but after a
pair of time outs, the Phantoms showed the character of a solid
hockey team and easily controlled the puck with an empty Ladybug
net. Final score Phantoms 3 Ladybugs 2. Meredith went home
smiling knowing she had made the difference in the game. |
| Sun 12/17/00
- 11:30 AM - Hershey at Hershey Park Arena - W 5 0
Braving a tornado watch and severe wind and rain, the dedicated
Delco Phantoms families hiked up the turnpike to meet the
Hershey Bears at the Hershey Arena on Sunday December 17th.
Perhaps it was fate, but the girls suited up in the locker room
used by the Philadelphia Phantoms the previous night, who had
defeated Hershey in their game. So the girls took it upon
themselves to continue the Phantom winning streak.
Leading the way was Kaitlin Donovan who
scored 51 seconds into the game off a feed from Jenna Bonczewski
and Lindsay Clarke. Kaitlin continues to find circular patterns
in front of the opposing net as she readies herself for any
stray pucks. Look for this young lady to score a lot of goals in
her career as a Phantom. That was all the scoring for the first
period, as Meredith Pia faced five shots- practically all on odd
man rushes for Hershey. But true to Meredith's personality, she
can rally from a period of inactivity to make stellar saves when
many goalies would be caught off guard. It is no wonder that
these Phantoms have given up only 32 goals in 18 games, while
scoring 73 of their own.
The entire team tightened up their
defense in the second period, as Jen Hughes, Kirsty Schoeninger,
Lindsay Clarke and Kimmy Kirkpatrick banded together to limit
Hershey to a single shot on goal for these 15 minutes. With this
tower of strength, the defensemen not only smother any rushes on
Meredith, they also play are quick to transition into the
offensive mode and lead the rush to the opponent's net. They
have gelled together under the guidance of coach Barbara Nevin
so that they can showcase their talents in both ends of the
rink.
In the second period Kirsty Schoeninger
scored for the Phantoms assisted by Jen Hughes and Jenna
Bonczewski off a slapshot. Kirsty and Jenna continue to lead the
team, averaging almost a goal a game for each girl. It was
Jenna's time to score unassisted early in the third period as
the Hershey girls seem to tire from their early forechecking
efforts. Following on her heels, Lindsay Clarke tallied one more
for the Phantoms on a beautiful end-to-end rush. Lindsay's
determination and quick acceleration are a hard combination to
beat when she joins the rush. But if it weren't for players like
Natasha Wurst, who is blossoming into a solid two way player,
Lindsay couldn't catch the opposing defenders off guard as she
often does. Natasha's "heads up" play compliments the
"team offense" and "team defense" style that
the Phantoms play. Unselfishly Natasha looks to cover for her
offensively minded defenseman, and assures that the team is
always in position to guard against a counter rush.
The final goal was scored by Kirsty
Schoeninger, again unassisted, but due to some impressive
goaltending by the Hershey netminder, Kirsty couldn't get the
hat trick that has alluded her this year. When the buzzer
sounded, the Phantoms had won 5 - 0, and Meredith Pia had racked
up another shutout for the team. The girls are looking forward
to the Christmas tournament in Connecticut.

Connecticut Polar Bears Tournament
Midget 3 Division
This years
tournament features 138 teams playing in 9 divisions for a
total of nearly 300 games over 3- 1/2 days on 12 ice
surfaces. www.ctpolarbears.com/ |
After a Merry Christmas the Delco Phantoms trudged north to the
Connecticut Polar Bears Tournament in Hartford Connecticut. There
were 130 teams playing in eight divisions with teams from Alaska,
Minnesota, New York, and all over New England.
Thu 12/28/00 -
8:15 AM - New Jersey Devils at Loomis - W 5 1
Game one began at the Loomis Chaffee School. Temperature outside
was twenty-five degrees, temperature inside fifteen degrees. But
the Phantoms were hot to compete against the Devils, however, and
Jenna Bonczewski led the team with her first goal of the day
assisted ably by Sarah Hannan. The Devils countered with a lucky
goal, then the Phantoms shut the door firmly and took control of
the game.
In the second period Melissa Kelly scored a
nice goal as she cruised across the slot and parked one between
the goaltender's pads. Melissa continues to conveniently locate
herself in the perfect location in the crease, so her production
in the goals scored department will inevitably increase. Next came
the moment Mr. Zappa and Coach Schoeninger had anticipated since
September. Amanda Giampapa made the pass to Hope Toogood who found
an open Phantom parked at the back door- stick down and ready to
shoot. Before you knew it Mallory Zappa had the puck flat on her
stick and proceeded to bury it into the twine for a 3 - 1 Phantom
lead.
Once again the defense was strong in this
game, led by the tandem of Lindsay Clarke who demonstrated passion
on every shift, and Sarah Hannan who throughout the tournament
ambushed enemy skaters who dared to penetrate goaltender Pia's
territory. You could tell Sarah loved the physical play here in
Connecticut. Speaking of defensemen, Jen Hughes and Kirsty
Schoeninger were also a tower of strength in this game. Jen was a
force as she continually kept pucks from escaping from her
offensive zone, while Kirsty kept doing her Bobby Orr imitation as
she danced through opponent's defenses.
The Phantoms' fourth goal was a blast
from Jenna at the top of the circle that jetted over the Devils'
goaltender's shoulder, an impressive goal by any standards. The
fifth goal was another rush from goal line to goaltender's crease,
between virtually every Devil's player by Kirsty Schoeninger. With
a simple flick of the wrists Kirsty scored to leave the Devils
coping with a 5 - 1 loss.
Thu 12/28/00 -
2:00 PM - Adirondack Northstars, NY at Newington 1 - L 0 3
The Phantoms second game was against the powerhouse Adirondack
Northstars. And stars they are indeed. The Phantoms stood tall
against the bigger and faster club through the first period, as
the score was deadlocked 0 - 0. This was due in large part to
goaltender Meredith Pia who did everything in her power to
deflect, capture, or otherwise steer the Northstars shots out of
harm's way. Meredith was easily the star of this game in the
second period, as wave after wave of Northstars came crashing at
her. Meredith was not frazzled by the Northstar offensive bursts,
and continued her exciting saves through the second and third
periods.
There was no quitter's attitude in
the Phantoms this game, as the offense continued to break the puck
out of their own zone, and the defense attempted to clear
Northstar wings and centers aside so that Meredith could do her
job. While the final score was 3 - 0, the Phantoms had learned
some valuable lessons about what the next level of hockey is all
about, and how they must play disciplined two way hockey on every
shift of the game.
Fri 12/29/00 -
7:00 AM - Ashburnham Bandits, MA at Cromwell Upper - L 1 5
Next up was the Ashburnham Bandits from Massachusetts. It was a
7:00 A.M. start, and the Phantoms did not seem to be their usual
perky and pesky selves. The Bandits scored three times in the
first period on the way to a 5 - 1 win. The lone offensive
highlight for the Phantoms was Kaitlin Donovan's and Jess Goldey's
goal with 27 seconds left in the game. Lindsay Clarke threaded a
pass to the two girls who slid the puck past the startled
goaltender at exactly the same time.
The highlights included Lindsay Clarke's
diving efforts all over the ice. This future Wesleyan College
defenseman did everything in her power to lead the team. Also
Kirsty Schoeninger attempted rush after rush, only to be turned
aside at the last moment every time. Coach Schoeninger also
noticed improved positional play by Amanda Giampapa and Natasha
Wurst, who continue to demonstrate their eagerness for learning
the fine points of the game.
Fri 12/29/00 -
5:30 PM - Chelmsford, MA at Cromwell Lower - L 0 5
The final game for the Phantoms was against the Chelmsford Lions
from Massachusetts. This was the best team in pool play, and they
showed it by scoring four times on the Phantoms in the first
period. But after a time out by the Phantoms, the team settled
down and started to play the type of hockey they know best- where
the offense supports the defense, and the defense supports the
offense. The Lions needed to win every period to advance to the
finals, and it was the Phantoms job to keep them from achieving
their goal.
In the second period, the Lions were so
desperate to score, they pulled their goalie late in the period.
After a flurry of activity, they finally inched one over the goal
line- so they needed only one more period victory to advance.
Well, the third period arrived and the Phantoms knew they had to
thwart every Lion offensive effort, while trying to create some
offense themselves. Kirsty Schoeninger and Kaitlin Donovan each
had good offensive opportunities, but couldn't light the red
light. The Lions got more and more anxious as the clock wound
down. They pulled their goalie again, but Meredith's spirit and
athleticism would not be denied. The Lions were shut out for the
rest of the game, and the Phantoms took some pride from the game
as they had spoiled the best team's chances at making it to the
championship game. While it was a 5 - 0 loss, the Phantoms
realized that they had played their best, and despite the first
period, had competed with this talented squad by a score of only 1
to 0 for the rest of the contest. |

1:45 PM - Shooting Stars at Ice Works - L 0 3
The
Phantoms faced their archrivals from Lehigh Valley at Iceworks on
Saturday January 6th. The Phantoms were determined to show Lehigh
Valley they were capable of achieving all the goals of the game
plan, and achieving their first victory against the Shooting
Stars. At the opening drop of the puck, the Phantoms looked sharp.
Wingers were making every effort to cover back on defense,
"George" was blanketed, and the defense made good
decisions about whether to move up into the offensive play, or
stay back.
Lehigh Valley opened the scoring with a
goal in the first period. It was a good shot from an unusual
angle, but the Phantoms were not going to give up easily. In the
second period, the Shooting Stars tallied the first power play
goal against the Phantoms all year, but there was extreme doubt
from the players on the ice that it even crossed the line.
Finally, the Stars scored one more goal, and that's all the
scoring there was. The Phantoms did outshoot the Stars by a 22-21
edge. However, the Stars defense was terrific at keeping the
Phantoms from reaching any rebounds.
Coach Schoeninger noticed several players
who turned up the energy level as the game tightened near the end.
Lindsay Clarke took it upon herself to try every trick in her bag
to help her team score and get back in the game. Her experience
and competitive drive don't let Lindsay hold anything back when it
comes to winning hockey games. Also playing rather well was Kimmy
Kirkpatrick, who left her offensive rushes in the locker room and
concentrated on covering her position and keeping Meredith's porch
clear. (And that is no small task as Kimmy is the smallest player
on the team.)
There is one more game against the Stars
at the end of the season, and hopefully the Phantoms can regroup,
practice their hardest to refine their skills and avenge this 3-0
loss.

| Sun 1/7/01 -
3:45 PM - Glaciers at Ice Land (in NJ) - W 8 2
On
Sunday the Phantoms traveled up I-95 to Iceland- the home of the
Glacier girls. The game began in a most unusual fashion as Kirsty
Schoeninger scored from behind the Glacier goal line. As she
centered the puck, the goalie unfortunately nudged it in.
Virtually no one on the ice even noticed the goal had crossed the
line, but none of the Phantoms were ready to complain. Not one of
Kirsty's classic goal line to goal line rushes, but still counts
on the scoreboard. (Why can't we ever have this kind of luck
against the Stars???)
Hope Toogood then took over the show. She
found herself open in front of the net twice, and scored on both
shots to put the Phantoms up 3 - 1. Next it was Kelly's turn,
fashionable as always in her yellow helmet. Jenna threaded a
perfect pass to Kelly alone at the back door. Another case of a
forward rushing to the net to gain position, and it paying
off. Kelly had enough time to sing all of God Bless America
before she roofed her shot. The Glaciers scored again in the third
period, but the pent up emotion of the Phantoms was about to
become unleashed. Hope scored for her first ever hat trick from
deep in the corner, then again from the slot for her fourth of the
day. Her smile after the game looked like she could be a model for
a toothpaste commercial!
The Phantoms final two goals were two
fine effort from Alison Murray. While Jenna was in the penalty
box, Alison decided there had to be some offense to aid the
penalty kill effort. Sure enough she scored from in front, and the
Phantoms were ahead 7 - 2. But Alison's determination to bottle up
the Glaciers' defense continued. This pesky forward scored AGAIN
shorthanded on the same shift.
Also special congratulations go out to
Kelly Winther and Kimmy Kirkpatirick. Kelly was the first
playmaker of the year in this game with three assists. It is easy
to see how Kelly brings a physical presence when she is skating
her wing, but from all the practices with her boys team, she makes
the Phantoms a much better club. And while Kimmy did not score,
she had several monster rushes, as she stickhandled her way
through Glacier after Glacier. Her determination is to be admired.
We are all pulling for you Kimmy, that first goal will come very
soon, and wait until you see the celebration for that one!
In summary, the Phantoms were their usual
upbeat, offensively minded, but defensively oriented selves. Just
what we needed after Saturday's game. The final was Phantoms 8-
Glaciers 2.

4:10 PM - Washington Little Caps PW A at Laurel (MD) - L 0 1
After a
week off from the run for the playoffs, the Phantoms traveled
south to meet the Little Caps in Maryland. The game plan called
for keeping the Caps on the perimeter, to avoid shots from
advantageous angles. The scheme worked well as the Phantoms held
the Caps PeeWee A team scoreless through the first period.
Of particular note was the play of
Kaitlin Donovan and Kimmy Kirkpatrick. Kaitlin acted like a
forechecking buzzard as she circled every puck carrying member of
the opposition until they coughed the puck up to her. Working
closely with Kaitlin was Jenna Bonczewski who corralled many stray
passes in the neutral zone and turned them into offensive
opportunities. Kimmy Kirkpatrick played perhaps her best game as a
Phantom. She was like a stone wall at the point. Refusing to budge
even a centimeter as she kept puck after puck from escaping
outside the blue line. She and her partner Lindsay Clarke were
especially effective as they cleared Meredith's crease again and
again.
Natasha Wurst also brought her
level of play up a peg as she has continued her development as a
solid two way player. Natasha sees the ice well, and has learned
how to effectively hold up players coming through neutral ice and
be effective on the forecheck in our offensive zone. But the most
impressive force was none other than Meredith Pia, who continues
to impress every member of the stands with her efforts between the
pipes. Meredith was like a human vacuum cleaner as she scooped up
every puck within a five foot radius of her, denying every Little
Caps player of any rebounds.
According to more than one member
of the fan base, the Phantoms had more quality chances than the
Caps, and better opportunities to score. But despite Meredith's
best efforts, the Caps slid one by, yet she had 52, yes 52 saves
on the game in a hard fought 1 - 0 loss. The entire team has grown
considerably as the season has progressed and has begun to play
like a unit who is determined to play every shift to the best of
their ability. We continue to set our sights on Lehigh Valley and
the last game of the season. Before that contest stands the game
against the Glaciers this Saturday.

12:50 PM - Glaciers at Face Off - W 7 1
The
Glaciers probably wish the Phantoms did not arrive for the
afternoon game on February 3rd. Because as the cars unloaded, a
full bench appeared and lots of exciting Phantoms hockey. Leading
the way was Hope Toogood, who not only scored the first goal off a
scramble in front of the net, but also tallied twice more for her
second hat trick of the year. Again and again Hope finds a way to
be in shooting position whenever she is on the ice. To her credit,
she has become quite a marksman, and adds to the Phantoms'
arsenal. The assist on the play went to Melissa Kelly and Mallory
Zappa.
The second goal was netted by Sarah Hannan, who
was impressive as a wing throughout the game. Nice job Sarah, your
versatility is a key to the Phantoms success. Next came a nice
goal by Jess Goldey, who had been sidelined with the flu. Jess is
no stranger to contact, playing with her JV boys team, and her
physical play in front of the net opens opportunities.
The third goal was a high rising shot by
the birthday girl- Tiffany Baker. After an extended flurry in the
offensive zone, Tiffany buried it cleanly. After Hope's second
goal, was a nice goal by the hard-working Kaitlin Donovan. As
usual, Kaitlin rushed to the net directly off the faceoff and
scored convincingly. The assist went to Natasha Wurst.
That left time for Hope to complete her
hat trick, and the team made a concerted effort to set up the lone
skater who has not scored- Kimmy Kirkpatrick. Sarah Hannan
graciously moved back to defense- and Kimmy was put out as a
winger. Time and again, she rushed the net, shot and was denied.
Then with the clock at five seconds, Kirsty wheeled the puck past
the lone defender- passed it right to Kimmy's stick. She shot
and...the goalie made the save! Keep up the persistence Kimmy, it
will pay off in the long run.
Also, let's not forget another strong
game by Meredith Pia, and the return of the Hugster- Jen Hughes-
who made the backline even stronger. Hats off to Jenna Bonczewski
and Lindsay Clarke who had two assists on the day. It was a happy
7-1 victory as much of the team celebrated at McDonalds. Next up
is Lehigh Valley- away on Saturday.

6:15 PM - Shooting Stars at Lehigh Valley - L 2 3
On February
10, 2001 the Phantoms sped up the Northeast Extension for their
last meeting of the regular season against the Lehigh Valley
Shooting Stars. The Phantoms knew it would be a difficult game,
but to compound matters Coach Schoeninger was home with the flu,
along with Kirsty. And Lindsay Clarke was out of town due to a
funeral. Thanks to Coach Baker, Tiffany’s dad, the game could go
on as scheduled.
Lehigh was up to its old tricks as they
took the lead in the first period 1 - 0. But the defense of the
Phantoms, including Kimmy Kirkpatrick, Sarah Hannan, and Jen
Hughes were going to be very stingy this day. Also new to the
defense corps was Tiffany Baker, who volunteered to help the
defensive squad, and who showed her usual pesky play at this new
position.
In the second period the Phantoms rallied and
took the lead 2 - 1. Hope Toogood and Kaitlin Donovan lit the
lamp, and gave the Phantoms the chance to steal a game from the
undefeated Stars. Mr. Baker especially was awed by Kaitlin’s
tenacious forechecking which led to several Phantom breakaways.
Meredith turned shot after shot aside, but
Lehigh was able to score twice more to win the game 3 - 2. It was
an excellent game, and a prelude of the playoffs to come February
24-25 in Hershey.

5:30 PM - Chester County at The Barn - T 4 4
It was
up to Chester County to the freezing cold Barn on February 17th.
By mid-game, the score was 3 - 1 and believe it or not the
Phantoms were down by two goals (we'll get to that later). The
left winger passes to her tall right winger and she winds up for
the shot. "SCORE!!!" screams the elated members of the
Phantoms bench, the crowd, and the Phantoms goalie. MEREDITH PIA,
yes I said, "Meredith Pia scores her first goal as a
Phantom!!!"
That's right, Meredith scored as a right
wing, and assisted later for another point. So you ask, who was in
goal? None other then the captain- Kirsty Schoeninger was between
the pipes. Yes, this game was anything but normal for the Delco
Phantoms as they traveled out to meet the Chester County Cougars,
where the Zamboni is decorated like a COW!
This unusual game began with a goal by
our very own Mighty Mouse- Kaitlin Donovan to give the Phantoms a
1 - 0 lead. But the Cougars came back with some much more powerful
skaters and scored the next three on Kirsty. But the Phantoms
showed the character they are made of and bounced back with the
one and only Meredith's goal, assisted by Jess Goldey. The
Phantoms weren't done though. Later in the second period Jen
Hughes scored off a slapshot on the point, putting the Phantoms
back in the game. The Cougars responded by scoring their fourth
goal on Kirsty only 15 seconds later. Note to Kirsty: Keep your
day job, but you performed well!!
The Phantoms weren't about to go home
defeated, especially Sarah Hannan. Sarah went on an end-to-end
rush with sheer determination, cleanly beating the goalie. This
tied the game at four, which is where it stayed until the third
period came to a close. Despite the unusual setting, a great game
was played by all, especially a recovering Kimmy Kirkpatrick. Now
Kimmy's the only Phantom who has not yet scored. Not to worry,
Kimmy has confided in the coaching staff that she has saved up all
her goal scoring for the playoffs when we will really need it! See
you all in Hershey- with desire brimming from every helmet and a
will to bring the DVHL championship back to the Phantoms where it
has remained since its inception.

DVHL
Playoffs |
The long awaited playoffs began at Twin Ponds West in
Mechanicsburg on February 24, 2001. Set to square off were the
Phantoms (the number two seed), the Lehigh Valley Stars
(undefeated as the number one seed), the Hershey Bears (number 3
seed) and the Glaciers. In thirty hours, the Delco Phantoms would
play nine periods of hockey and SEVEN overtime periods. The
players were ready after reading and memorizing their seven page
scouting report compiled by the coaches. It was truly a memorable
weekend for all.
Sun 2/24/01 -
11:30 to 1:30 PM - DVHL Playoff 2x4
Phantoms vs. Glaciers at Twin Ponds West - W 5 2
First off for the Phantoms were the Glaciers. Special thanks to
Mr. Baker who joined Coach Schoeninger on the bench, giving the
defense and the entire team advice from his vast background. This
natural rivalry with the team from North Philadelphia began three
years ago, but come playoff time, the Glaciers know the Phantoms
play their best hockey. Captain Jenna Bonczewski led the way with
a nice backhand goal with Tiffany Baker acting as a decoy- a tip
of the cap to Kaitlin Donovan for the assist. The second Phantom
goal was a Kirsty Schoeninger special. She must have held the puck
for a minimum of ten seconds behind her own net, waiting for the
forecheckers to commit. Finally Kirsty saw an opening, deked
around one Glacier, then a second, a third and finally the
defenseman and scored an unassisted goal for a 2 - 0 Phantom lead.
The Glaciers retaliated with a single goal to end the period.
While the Phantoms intended to start every game with a blast of
energy, they outshot the Glaciers by only 5 - 3 after one period.
In the second period Tiffany's power play
goal gave us the 3 - 1 cushion, with assists awarded to Jenna and
Kaitlin. Tiffany, Kaitlin and Jenna dominated as a line throughout
the game. Also during the second period Lindsay Clarke roared down
the slot on grit, determination, and sheer skill, and tallied the
Phantoms fourth goal. The assist went to Hope Toogood who was
playing two days before her sixteenth birthday.
While the Glaciers scored once in the
second period, Jenna was the one who had the last laugh. She faked
the goalie into moving to her right, so of course Jenna shot to
her left and finished the scoring at 5 - 2. Kaitlin had an assist
on that goal too, giving her the playmaker award with three
assists! Meredith was her usual tower of strength between the
pipes, covering every rebound that was near her. Shots on goal
were 29 - 10 in favor of the Phantoms. It was a dominating effort,
just what the Phantoms needed to start their playoff run.
Sat 2/25/01 -
9:30 to 11:30 AM - DVHL Playoff 1x2
Phantoms vs. Lehigh Valley at Twin Ponds West - L 2 3
Most of the Phantoms retired to the Days Inn Hotel for some rest,
hallway fun with the Donovan children, and a birthday celebration
for Hope hosted by the Toogood family. A good time was had by all,
when Sarah Hannan and Kirsty called a team meeting in the Wurst
suite. With dry erase board in hand the team discussed the
particulars of the scouting report and the need to pull together
against Lehigh Valley.
Saturday morning the Phantoms met for
twenty minutes before the game. Strategy, lineups and tendencies
were discussed, and when those girls exited the locker room they
were ready to overcome any obstacle in their path.
One of the team goals was to get a first
period goal against the Stars, for they hadn't all season. Sure
enough, at 11:49 the Stars took a roughing penalty and the power
play was ready to strike. Jenna leaned down for an offensive
faceoff to the left of the goalie. She easily won the faceoff back
to Kirsty Schoeninger, and before the goaltender could adjust, the
puck was in the net by 11:47 thanks to a pretty rising wrist shot.
Unfortunately the Stars scored next to tie it at one apiece. Shots
on goal after one period- Phantoms 7- Stars -6.
During the second period many players
stepped up their level of play. Amanda Giampapa left her point
position to assist a scramble in front of her own net, a mature
play on her part! Alison Murray dogged Star after Star as she
excelled on offense and defense. It was as if she taking after
Kaitlin Donovan the whirling dervish of the team who is ready to
assume the nickname the Pestinator! It was during the second
period that there was a scramble at the side of the Stars net.
Bodies were flying, as player after player attempted to control
the puck. And who should come up with it but Tiffany Baker who
buried it amid a sea of white and purple jerseys. Many fans in the
stands could see the improved Phantoms play, and everyone had to
admire their work ethic. Players like Mallory Zappa had found
their shot and made sure they abided by the three step rule for
covering opponents. During these playoffs players like Melissa
Kelly had discovered new strength and speed, leading to a
breakaway and a shot that just missed the net. Sarah Hannan, as a
forward played much like Alison, refusing to give an inch in the
defensive zone, forechecking in the neutral zone, and
cycling nicely in the offensive zone.
And the score held as the young Phantoms
followed the scouting report to perfection. The Stars best player
was kept off the scoreboard, and after two periods the Phantoms
had been barely outshot 15 - 14. Kelly Winther showed off her
conditioning by zooming up and down her wing, never looking
winded. Natasha Wurst showed off her knowledge of the game with
several nice forechecking plays and a sense of knowing where she
was needed most in the defensive zone, even covering up for
rushing defensemen. She also did a fine job covering players
rushing through the neutral zone. Another player to be noted was
Jess Goldey, who did not play on Saturday due to a bruised
shoulder. She did everything in her power to rehabilitate it in
one day, and came to play on Sunday. Pain was no object, and the
doctor read the x-ray twice verifying it was not separated. So
Jess put on her game face and came to play. Her courage was an
inspiration to all.
Every hockey aficionado knows that
character comes out in the third period of a playoff game. This
was no exception. Unfortunately the Phantoms took a penalty, and
the Stars found a miniscule gap in Meredith's armor to tie the
score. Later the referee admitted the play was five feet offside,
conveniently captured on videotape by Mr. Wurst.
The time wound down, but the Phantoms
fought back again and again, determined to beat the undefeated
Stars. At the end of regulation, Coach Schoeninger met with the
girls and laid our strategy for overtime. It began 5 on 5. It was
a seesaw battle with players like Jen Hughes, Lindsay Clarke, and
Kimmy Kirkpatrick playing an outstanding game- leading the
defense. They continually met the stars at their own blue line and
by sheer will, skill, and stick-to-itiveness they would not allow
an odd man rush.
The first overtime ended without a goal. So it
was now 4 on 4. The Phantoms went with a two offense two defense
system, and began to get the best of the Stars. But nary a goal
was scored- again! In the third overtime the tired Phantoms
pressed the Stars defense, but puck just wouldn't find its way
into an effective shooting lane because of the terrific play of
the Stars defense. By the end of this period the shots on goal in
overtime were Phantoms- 6 Stars - 3.
What next, time for a shootout. Coach
Schoeninger had practiced this all year with a game called
"Beat the Goalie". Selected before the game were, in
order, Kaitlin Donovan, Alison Murray, Tiffany Baker, Jenna
Bonczewski, and lastly Kirsty Schoeninger. All the players
were nervous, never having been in this situation. By now, the
rink had filled to more than 200 people, lining the entire
perimeter. Kaitilin, Alison, and Tiffany took their best shots,
but could not score. The stars got a lucky one, and it was left to
Jenna and Kirsty. Jenna got up her speed, and although she had the
goalie beaten, somehow the save was made. Meredith snuffed the
next shooter leaving Kirsty as our final hope. She faked to her
left, drew the puck back and launched the shot as the goalie
dropped into her butterfly stance. The shot rose, as did all the
players, coaches, and fans of the Phantoms. It was headed right
over her shoulder. As the puck seemed frozen in air, the final
shred of fabric from the goalies shoulder deflected it, and the
Phantoms knew they had lost their bid to knock off the Stars.
Certainly the Phantoms were
disappointed as they lined up for the handshake. But every
attendee at that rink knew that this was one well played hockey
game by both teams. So it was not the time to dwell on the loss,
but time to rally against the Hershey Bears who were next on the
list.
Sun 2/25/01 -
4:00 to 6:00 PM - DVHL Playoff 2x3
Phantoms vs. Hershey at Twin Ponds West - W 3 2
The team decided to rally its psyche at Fuddruckers of all places.
Kimmy won four stuffed animals, and the restaurant heard orders
taken by Sponge Bob, Squidward and a three year old ducky. (I
wonder who that was, but we all saw pictures of her!) The
character of this team was about to be tested at 4:00. The Bears
did not play that day, and the Phantoms were sure to come in flat-
no matter how they tried to uplift their sagging spirits.
So it was time for Coach Baker and Coach
Schoeninger to set the game plan down. We knew we had to score
early and brave their early onslaught of forecheckers. But we also
had noticed the Bears seemed to back off by the third period, and
we would be ready to attack!
After the warmup the Phantoms looked
eager and ready to play top notch hockey. But it was the pesky
Bears who hit the twine first. What made it worse was that
"George" had scored, and we were trying to shut her down
in the same way we shut the leading player of the Stars down. Key
players for the Phantoms were Alison Murray who again played solid
two way hockey. Her conditioning level was also evident as she was
always ready for her next shift. Also Kimmy Kirkpatrick stymied
attack after attack. Even though she was six inches shorter and
probably five years younger, Kimmy wouldn't allow anyone a quality
shot on her netminder. At the end of the period it was 1 - 0 in
Hershey's favor, but the Phantom dominance showed in the shots on
goal- 12 to 4 in the Phantom's favor.
The team decided between periods to make
Hershey play their style, and this paid off as Jenna fed the
assist happy Kaitlin Donovan, who shuffled it off to Jessica
Goldey. Yes, old Wounded Arm herself! But Jess was playing on pure
adrenaline, and she buried it to tie the score. That was all the
Phantoms needed, they thought, and the game would turn in their
favor.
Give credit to that Hershey team, though. they
would not quit even though the Bears had yet to best any Phantom
girls' team! They fought back with their second goal and took the
lead. But once again, the story of the game can be told by the
shots on net. The Phantoms had 22- Hershey 13.
The four overtimes now were wearing on
the offense and defense. Jen Hughes, Kirsty, Lindsay, and Kimmy
had logged a lot of ice time, and still refused to give Hershey a
quality shot. Then, in the blink of an eye, Kelly saw an opening
and passed to Jenna. She showed some real character, and didn't
flinch, but rather slammed it home for the goal. The score was now
tied, and the Phantoms smelled victory.
While Hershey typically gets winded late
in the game, it was not the case this day. they fought back at
every opportunity. But Meredith had her invisible shield stretched
over her net and refused to weaken. Hope hurt her knee and had to
be helped to the bench. By now the shots on goal were 34 to 15, in
favor of the Phantoms. The clock tickeded by slowly, as Kelly,
Tiffany, Jenna and Sarah refused to give into their aching bodies.
They Phantoms were on a mission.
The buzzer sounded and the fifth overtime
of the day began. The Phantoms seemed to get a renewed enthusiasm
as they went on the attack. They were skating five on five at the
time, and for the duration, did not allow a shot on the Phantom
net. Meredith was certainly happy about that!
Now we dropped to four on four, and Coach
Schoeninger reminded the two forwards and two defensemen that
defense wins games, and that everyone must cover their position
and move on the drop of the puck. The second overtime again saw
Kirsty, Kimmy, Lindsay and Jen Hughes deny any Bear from shooting
at their net. It seemed to all that it was the Phantoms game to
win. Shots on goal at the end of the second overtime- Phantoms-2
Bears-0.
However, having more shots on goal will
not win the game unless one goes in, and so Coach Schoeninger told
his three on three players that Sarah Hannan was to take her first
shift of the weekend on defense. Kirsty was to be the swing player
and Jenna the offensive force. At the drop of the puck, Hershey
gathered a rush on our net for two quick shots which Meredith
skillfully steered aside. Sarah gained possession and saw Jenna
skating toward center ice and hit her with a pass. Jenna artfully
turned, and out of the corner of her eye saw Kirsty accelerating
at the rate of a 767 jet. She laid a pass right on Kirsty's stick
who approached the Hershey defenseman. She faked left, drew back
to her right and left the defensemen literally at the blue line as
Kirsty pounded hard to the Hershey net.
Seeing this from the bench, every player
began to rise to their feet, hoping, praying that this might be
the end to the seventh overtime of the day. Kirsty again faked
backhand, drew to her forehand and the Hershey goalie dropped to
her knees. Kirsty did not take her eyes off the goaltender, and
seeing the top seven inches of the net free, unleashed her
forehand wrist shot. As they players began to jump, all you could
see was the disc billow the twine and it was over.
The Phantoms exploded over the boards as
if a bomb had exploded under the bench. Within a split second
Jenna and Sarah had tackled Kirsty and six more players piled on,
giddy and exhilarated. Those six rolled off and eight more,
including a flying Meredith piled on a second time. It was time to
celebrate a season of man accomplishments. Showing true character,
the Hershey players lined up with tears in their eyes, but
congratulated the Phantoms on the win.
Finally it was over. The Phantoms skates
barely touched the ice as the wave of sheer joy overcame the
soreness in their bodies. It was time to celebrate the many
accomplishments of the season. The Phantoms skated off, knowing
they had won 3 -2 in this final game of their playoff. But if the
Glaciers could just knock off Lehigh in the 6:00 game, they would
be crowned champions. (Lehigh Valley won 3 -1, even though we beat
the Glaciers 5 - 2!)

Coach Schoeninger and Baker couldn't say enough in the locker room
about all the players who contributed to the tremendous
championship series. The goaltender, Meredith, the defense, and
the offense had followed the game plan over and above all
expectations. There were players who sacrificed ice time when the
coaches felt it necessary to garner certain matchups- they were
thanked. There were wounded warriors like Hope and Jess who had
made their contribution- they were thanked. The captains had all
displayed leadership when they team needed someone to take charge,
leading by their perspiration and inspiration. Praise was given to
all seventeen athletes. This team may have lost the DVHL
championship in quadruple overtime, but according to every parent
that Coach Schoeninger spoke to- they were true champions!
Be proud of the way you showed your character this weekend,
ladies. And may you never forget the desire, hard work, dedication
and will to win that you exhibited in these nine periods and seven
overtimes. It was some outstanding hockey. The Delco Phantoms
girls' program has a bright future ahead if this is any indication
of your potential. And hats off and a salute to Sarah Hannan and
Lindsay Clarke who will age out of the program this year. They
have helped many this year, and their support and leadership have
been exemplary. Thanks girls for a great season, and may these
memories be a special part of your Phantom's experience for many
years to come!!
It was unbelievable, a moment every coach and parent hopes
for!!!!!
Congratulations to
the Girls B team!
I had to write and say how proud I am of
the girls B team. I had the pleasure of helping Fritz out during
the playoffs and witnessed the most determination and team spirit
I have ever seen in my years in hockey. The triple overtime win
against Hershey after just playing a shootout (against Lehigh
Valley) 4 hours earlier was tremendous. I know that no girl
left any thing in their tank. I just have to find out how to
bottle their attitude and use it on my players.
Thanks for letting me be a part of it.
Please forward this to Fritz and players.
Thanks, Brent
Baker
The Girls B team delivered a valiant effort in their game against
the first place seed, Lehigh Valley.
The game was still tied at 2-2 after
three overtimes periods. The penalty shots (5 shooters for
each team) were the difference between first and second place in
the DVHL Girls B Championship game. The Lehigh Valley team managed
one goal and the Phantom Girls just couldn't punch it in. So
close!
I know I speak for the parents and the
Delco Phantoms Club when I say how very proud I am of our girls
and coaches! Great season!

6:15 PM - Radnor HS Girls' Hockey Team at Ice Works - W 6 4
Lindsay
Clarke had asked since January if the Radnor High School Girls'
Hockey Team could meet the young Phantoms. With a little help from
Mr. Stoltzfus, we were able to put the game together for the
eighth of March. This was to be a memorable night for a lot of the
Phantoms.
To begin the parade of unusual events,
Meredith was vacationing in Cancun, so Kirsty, the flexible
Phantom, agreed to climb between the pipes. Christie Urban also
joined the Phantoms, and it was clear to see on the first shift
that she brought an enthusiasm to the game and a wealth of talent.
As the first puck dropped, Lindsay was playing for Radnor, and the
Phantoms were ready to give her team all they could handle.
The first goal was scored by Jess Goldey.
Kimmy Kirkpatrick took the initial shot, then Jess went top shelf
to make it 1 - 0. Radnor tallied once to even the score at the end
of the initial period. But Sarah Hannan, playing defense for
Kirsty, decided to pull a Kirsty end-to-end picture perfect rush.
You could see in Sarah's eyes that she was determined to find a
path to the net, and sure enough, she deked and maneuvered her way
to go one-on-one with the Radnor goalie. It would be Sarah who won
that battle, high to the glove side.
The second period began with Radnor
scoring twice as they pressured the Phantom defense. One Phantom
highlight was a breakaway on Kirsty who challenged the shooter and
beat her with her glove. Give Radnor credit, they out shot the
Phantoms 14 - 2 in that period.
Radnor scored again to begin the third
period, so it was now 4 - 2 favor Radnor. But little did Radnor
know that the Phantoms had a mission, begun in December. The team
had vowed to get a goal for every Phantom player, including
Meredith. The team had been successful in this pursuit, except for
one Kimberly Kirkpatrick who had opportunity after opportunity
denied all year long. This twelve-year-old young lady was switched
to offense for this last period of the year, with Jess Goldey
kindly moving back to defense.
At this point in the game Christie Urban
decided to take matters into her own hands. She faked three
different Radnor players and wound up one-on-one on the
goaltender. That was all she needed to score. Her fluid skating
and accurate passing were admired by all. The Phantoms netted two
more goals as the period wound down. It was now Phantoms 5 -
Radnor 4. But try as hard as she might, Kimmy concentrated her
play as a winger on keeping Radnor off the scoreboard.
Coach Schoeninger decided with a minute
and a half left in the game, to give Kimmy one last shift. The
entire bench was cheering her on as she took to the ice. Radnor
was not about to give up easily, and pulled their goaltender with
a minute to go. The puck entered the Phantom's zone, and the
pressure was on Kirsty to hold the fort. Then out of the blue,
there was skirmish in front of the Phantom net. Quickly the
Phantoms cleared the zone to relieve the pressure. When all of a
sudden, who should grab the puck in mid-flight, but Kimmy
Kirkpatrick!!! The Radnor defense knew she could put the game out
of reach, so they drove her to the boards at an awkward angle.
Kimmy summoned all the energy she had as the bench rose in her
support. At the last second, before the pinching defenseman cut
her off, Kimmy launched the last Phantom shot of the year. The
puck's flight was directly on net, but would it find its way into
the net.
As the bench let out a roar, the puck
nestled casually in the twine and Kimmy had scored her first
Phantom goal! The look of exhilaration on her face was clearly
evident as she skated to the bench to high five her teammates. She
proceeded to her cousin, Kirsty, and they celebrated the end to a
memorable season. Final score for the final game- 6 - 4 favor the
Phantoms.
