| On August 1, 2004 the championship game for the
Women's "A" division was played at Iceworks in Aston. Yes, the temperature was hot outside, but the
action inside was hot and heavy as well. The two teams were the Little
Flyers, a team of girls from as far away as Lancaster, Pottstown, and
Delaware, against the Crusaders, which were comprised mostly of Neumann
College women ice hockey players. What made the championship contest even more exciting was that these two teams had faced off against each other in last year's spring championship, with the Crusaders coming out on top. Also of interest, the game was slightly delayed due to one of the players (the goalie!) not being able to negotiate around a mudslide on the Schuylkill Expressway. The Little Flyers took the ice with a substitute goalie- defenseman Jess Bryan. But the team was relieved to see that Allie DiRico was able to finally bypass the mud and get to her position between the pipes later in the first period. The game was not going to lean the Little Flyers way, however, as the Crusaders scored first, and again to end the first period with a two goal lead. They built upon the lead in the next stanza, and confidently strutted into the third period. But Coaches Brent Baker and Fritz Schoeninger would not surrender, and implored the team to take each shift as a single entity. And before five minutes had expired, the Little Flyers had scored once even strength, and once on the power play thanks to Mary Wojcik and Jamie Goldsmith. Shortly after that, Goldsmith buried a shot and tied the game, and a glimmer of hope became a window of opportunity. With less than two minutes in the game, Jeannie O'Neill was open in the slot, received a pass and deposited it into the twine. The Little Flyers bench erupted in simultaneous hugs to celebrate the moment. But there was still time for the veteran Crusader team to come back. This was further aided by a penalty taken by the Little Flyers. The Crusaders pulled their netminder, and mounted one final attack. But the puck was intercepted by backup goaltender Jess Bryan who iced it. The puck glided toward the open Crusader net, but as luck would have it the puck clanged off the post and was then controlled by the hard working Little Flyers to ice the win. All that was left was the handshake between these two fine teams. This is probably the last game summary by the man who has been this website's Silver Tongued Devil for four seasons. Fritz was given the Game Puck and the Trophy, by the girls, for his tireless contributions to girl's ice hockey. |
