Philadelphia Little Flyers Girls 14U start season with wins over Quakers and Long Island Waves
by Chris Nelson

The Little Flyers Girls 14U team started their 2003/2004 season with a strong performance at Iceworks on October 4th against the Quakers. The Little Flyers struck first at 4:28 of the 1st period when Kelly Sullivan stole the puck while shorthanded and put a wrister past the Quaker net minder. The Quakers answered at 11:28 with a powerplay goal that left the game knotted at one at the end of the first period. The Flyers scored the only goal of the 2nd period when Taylor Worley took a pass from Amanda Vito and found an opening between the Quaker goalie’s legs. In the 3rd period it was all Little Flyers as Erica Crabtree, Sam Nelson and Amanda Vito ran the score to a final tally of 7 to 1 with the final shot count at 42 to 5. Flyers coach Mark Frederick highlighted the solid defensive play of all the girls as well as the play of goalie Amy Leichliter.

The Flyers continued their aggressive play this past Sunday on the Waves home ice in Freeport, L.I., NY. The Little Flyers lit the lamp first at 4:20 of the opening period when Erica Crabtree redirected a hard shot by Amanda Vito that found the back of the Wave’s net. Crabtree and Tori Sourbeer added two more goals giving the Flyers a commanding lead 3-0 at the end of one. Little Flyers forward Kelly Sullivan made it 4-0 at the 3:34 mark of the second by slamming home a rebound off a hard shot from the point. The Waves got on the board with 20 seconds left in the 2nd period when Kristen Tubbs beat Flyers net keeper Andra Penning on a penalty shot. The Flyers added two more tallies in the 3rd on goals by Amanda Frederick and Sami Pulley. The Waves struck again with 2:57 left in the 3rd, but it proved to be too little too late as the Little Flyers out shot the Waves 62 to 8 and won handily, 6-2. Coach Frederick, although pleased overall with the team’s performance, is looking forward to the team working on applying pressure with a lead and developing stronger passing, shooting and team play over the next couple of weeks.

Flyer Girls Go 1-1 in January AWHL Play
By Chris Nelson

The Little Flyer Girls 14U team started January AWHL play with a tough road loss to the NJ Colonials but quickly rebounded with a win at the Princeton Tiger Lillies. After playing tough, physical hockey in the annual Polar Bear Tournament in New Haven, Connecticut the Flyers visited the Colonials on Saturday, January 10. The Flyers had the first real scoring opportunity just 60 seconds into the opening period while on the powerplay. Flyer Captain, Sam Nelson hit a streaking Taylor Worley with a backhand pass to the slot but Worley’s wrist shot was turned aside by the Colonial goalie. The two teams played a scoreless and physical first period exchanging penalties for roughing and interference. The Flyers were again on the powerplay at the 4:30 mark of the second period, but despite several good scoring opportunities, failed to find the back of the Colonial net. NJ got on the board 7 minutes into the period with a powerplay goal. The Colonials added a second tally at 11:42 on a hard slap shot from the blue line through a screen of Colonial and Flyer players in front of net minder, Amy Leichliter. The physical play continued in the 3rd period when Flyers defenseman Amanda Vito was sent sprawling by a Colonial player and had to leave the ice. At the 4:00 mark another Flyer player; Nicole D'Urbano was injured on a vicious check from behind that sent the defenseless Flyer headfirst into the boards. Flyers Assistant Captain, Erica Crabtree, took the Colonial offender to the boards and both players found themselves in the box. Despite several solid scoring opportunities late in the game, the Little Flyers could not close the gap suffering their first league loss of the season 2-0.

The Flyers and Tiger Lillies squared off on Princeton’s home ice on Saturday, January 17th. Coming off the tough loss to the Colonials, the Little Flyers jumped all over the Tiger Lillies in the first period. Erica Crabtree took a brilliant centering pass from left-winger Julie Pesta and beat the Princeton goalie high on the stick side at the 4-minute mark. Philadelphia continued their aggressive play creating a breakaway chance for Amanda Frederick who slammed the backhander past the sprawling Princeton goalie with 3 minutes left in the opening tilt. The Tiger Lillies responded to the Flyer goals early in the second period when they slipped a rebound past a sprawling Leichliter. But the Flyers came right back when forward Sammie Pulley fed Kelly Sullivan in the slot and Sullivan lifted the wrister past the Princeton goalie for what proved to be the game winner. Princeton added a second goal in the third period but the Flyers tightened the grip with aggressive play holding off the Tiger Lillies for the 3-2 win.
